It starts with a small notice in the menu bar. "Service Recommended." Then the estimated time remaining starts lying to you — 3 hours becomes 40 minutes becomes a sudden shutdown at 30 percent halfway through a call. And eventually the MacBook becomes a desktop computer with a very expensive built-in screen, permanently tethered to a charger.
Every MacBook reaches this point. Apple designs its batteries to retain 80 percent of original capacity for 1,000 charge cycles, and for a machine used daily, that is roughly three to four years. What happens next is a genuine fork in the road: MacBook battery replacement from a specialist in London restores full mobility for a fraction of the machine's value, while the alternative — a new MacBook — costs four figures for a problem that is, mechanically, one component.
The complication is that MacBook batteries are unlike phone batteries. On most models since 2012 the cells are glued directly into the aluminium top case with an adhesive strong enough that Apple's own approach on some models is to replace the entire top case, keyboard and trackpad along with the battery. That is why this is a repair that rewards choosing carefully.
At Fone Doctors MacBook batteries are a daily job, and a large share of our customers walk over from the City and Canary Wharf offices nearby. Here is what they ask, answered.
How To Check Your MacBook Battery Health
macOS gives you more information than any phone does, if you know where to look.
The quick check
Hold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar. You will see one of four conditions:
| Condition | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Battery is functioning normally | None |
| Service Recommended | Capacity has fallen below roughly 80 percent, or the battery is not performing as it should | Replace — this is Apple's own threshold |
| Replace Soon | Older macOS wording for the same threshold | Replace |
| Replace Now / Service Battery | Battery is significantly degraded or faulty | Replace immediately |
The detailed check
Open System Information (hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information), then select Power in the sidebar. Look for:
- Cycle Count. One cycle is one full discharge and recharge, in total — not per session. Apple rates modern MacBook batteries for 1,000 cycles.
- Condition. As above.
- Full Charge Capacity versus Design Capacity (or Maximum Capacity as a percentage on newer macOS). This is your real battery health figure.
Reading the numbers
| Cycle count | Maximum capacity | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Under 300 | Above 90 percent | Healthy |
| 300 to 700 | 85 to 90 percent | Normal wear; no action |
| 700 to 1,000 | 80 to 85 percent | Approaching service threshold; plan a replacement |
| Over 1,000 | Below 80 percent | Service Recommended; replace |
| Any | Below 70 percent, or sudden drops | Replace now; shutdowns will follow |
Symptoms that override the numbers
- Shuts down above 20 percent, especially under load
- Estimated time remaining is wildly wrong
- The machine only runs when plugged in
- The trackpad sits proud of the case, clicks poorly, or the machine rocks on a flat desk — this is swelling, and it is urgent

Why MacBook Batteries Need a Specialist
This is the honest part that most repair content skips.
The cells are glued to the top case. From the 2012 Retina MacBook Pro onward, and on every MacBook Air since 2018, the battery is not a single removable pack. It is four to six individual lithium cells, bonded with strong adhesive directly to the inside of the aluminium top case — the piece that also carries the keyboard and trackpad. On some models the cells sit millimetres from the trackpad flex and the speakers.
Removal is the whole job. Releasing glued cells without bending, puncturing or overheating them takes controlled solvent application, patience and the right tools. A punctured lithium cell is a fire, and a bent one is a fire waiting to happen. This is not a job for a kitchen table and a guitar pick.
Apple's approach on many models is to replace the top case. Rather than remove the cells, Apple often swaps the entire top case assembly — keyboard, trackpad and battery together. It is a genuine part and it works, but it is why Apple's battery pricing on some models looks like a keyboard repair, and why the machine is typically sent away.
The adhesive residue must be fully removed. New cells bonded over old adhesive residue sit unevenly, and uneven cells put pressure on the trackpad and case over time.
Calibration matters. After replacement the battery management system needs to learn the new cells, and the machine needs to be charge-cycled and tested under load before it goes back — because a fault that appears only when the battery is driving the machine hard is not found by a five-minute check.
What a MacBook Battery Replacement Involves
- Free diagnostic. Cycle count, capacity and condition read from the system; then a load test on the bench, because the system readout does not always reflect a cell that has developed high resistance. Charging circuit checked so that a charging fault is not mistaken for a battery fault.
- Full function documentation — keyboard, trackpad, speakers, ports, display — before any work.
- Bottom case removed, battery disconnected first, before anything else is touched.
- Overlying components lifted — trackpad flex, speakers where required, and on some models the logic board itself must be partially released to reach the cells.
- Cells released with controlled solvent worked in from the edges. The cells are never levered from the middle, never bent, never heated aggressively.
- Top case cleaned to bare metal at the bond surfaces.
- Capacity-matched replacement cells with genuine protection circuitry fitted and bonded in the original positions.
- Reassembly and reconnection.
- Calibration and load testing. Full charge, discharge under sustained load, recharge, with the battery management system confirmed to be reporting accurately. Condition confirmed as Normal.
Our battery replacement service covers every MacBook from the 2012 Retina models to current Apple Silicon machines, with free diagnostics, a fixed price before work begins, and a twelve-month warranty.
The Swollen Battery Warning
MacBook batteries swell more visibly than phone batteries, because there is more of them and they sit directly under the trackpad.
How to check in ten seconds: place the MacBook closed on a flat desk. Does it rock? Does the trackpad sit level with the surrounding case, or is it raised? Does the trackpad click evenly? Does the bottom case bulge?
Any of those means the cells are generating gas. A swollen cell is under pressure and is a fire risk. It also pushes upward on the trackpad and downward on the bottom case, and in advanced cases can crack the trackpad glass or distort the top case.
Stop charging it. Do not press on the trackpad or case. Do not put it in a bag under other items. Bring it in. Swollen battery replacement is routine when handled by a specialist and genuinely dangerous when it is not.

Making the New Battery Last
- Leave Optimised Battery Charging on (System Settings, Battery). It learns your routine and holds the charge at 80 percent until shortly before you unplug.
- Do not leave it plugged in at 100 percent permanently if you can help it. macOS mitigates this, but a MacBook that lives on a desk plugged in for two years still ages faster than one that is cycled.
- Keep it cool. Heat is the largest cause of cell degradation. Do not use it on a duvet or a sofa, where the vents are blocked.
- Do not discharge to zero. Deep discharges stress lithium cells.
- Use the correct wattage charger. An underpowered charger on a 16-inch Pro under load will make both the charger and the battery run hot.

Key Takeaways
- Check cycle count and condition in System Information under Power. Over 1,000 cycles or "Service Recommended" means replace.
- MacBook battery replacement in London costs £129 to £229 and takes two to four hours, because the cells are glued into the top case.
- Glued cells need a specialist. Levering or puncturing a lithium cell is a fire, not a mistake.
- Apple often replaces the whole top case at a higher price with the machine sent away. Independent specialists replace the cells, same day.
- A raised trackpad or a machine that rocks on the desk is a swollen battery. Stop charging it today.
- Optimised Battery Charging on, keep it cool, and avoid living at 100 percent. Those three habits add years.
