Two shops. Same phone. Same fault. One quotes £59, the other quotes £119. The phone comes back working in both cases, and to the untrained eye on day one, the two screens look identical.

Six weeks later they do not look identical at all. One is still crisp, colour-accurate and responsive. The other has picked up a faint yellow cast, drains the battery noticeably faster, has stopped responding reliably in the top-left corner, and has permanently disabled True Tone.

The difference between those two outcomes is the OEM vs aftermarket phone screen decision, and almost nobody explains it to customers before they hand over their card. That is not an accident. The margin on a cheap aftermarket panel is far better than the margin on a proper one, and a screen that fails after the warranty window is, from a certain point of view, a returning customer.

The repair industry uses these words loosely and sometimes deliberately misleadingly. Here is what each one actually means.

The word to be most suspicious of is "original." It is unregulated, it means nothing legally, and it appears in shop windows next to prices that make genuine original parts mathematically impossible.

The Six Differences You Will Actually Notice

Specification sheets are abstract. Here is how the gap shows up in daily use.

1. Brightness, especially outdoors

Original panels on current flagships hit 1,000 to 2,000 nits peak. Budget aftermarket panels typically manage 400 to 600. Indoors you may not notice. Standing on a platform at London Bridge in July trying to read a boarding pass, you will notice immediately — and you will compensate by running the brightness at maximum, which brings us to the battery point below.

2. Colour accuracy and the yellow drift

Original OLED panels are calibrated to the DCI-P3 colour space at the factory. Cheaper panels ship with looser tolerances and, critically, degrade unevenly. The classic symptom is a warm yellow or green cast that develops over two to three months and is most obvious on white backgrounds — email, messages, documents.

3. Touch responsiveness and sampling rate

Touch sampling rate is how many times per second the digitizer polls for your finger. Originals run at 120Hz or higher. Budget panels often run at 60Hz. In practice that means typing feels marginally behind you, fast scrolling stutters, and games register swipes late. It is the kind of degradation people blame on the phone getting old.

4. Battery drain

This one surprises people. A less efficient panel driven harder to compensate for low brightness draws substantially more power. On a typical repair we see aftermarket panels cost 10 to 20 percent of daily battery life compared to an OEM-grade replacement in the same handset.

5. True Tone, auto-brightness and ambient sensing

True Tone works by reading ambient colour temperature and shifting the display to match. It depends on calibration data written to the panel at manufacture. Aftermarket panels either lack that data or carry generic values. The result is either True Tone disappearing from Settings entirely, or an auto-brightness system that hunts up and down in a way the original never did.

6. Durability and the oleophobic coating

The oleophobic coating is the invisible layer that stops fingerprints smearing and lets your thumb glide. Original panels carry a properly bonded coating that survives years. Budget panels frequently carry a thin sprayed coating that wears through in weeks, leaving a screen that feels tacky and shows every fingerprint. The underlying glass hardness also differs — cheaper cover glass chips at the edges far more readily on the second drop.

The Real Cost Comparison Over Two Years

The uncomfortable conclusion is that the cheap repair frequently is not cheaper. It just moves the cost six months into the future and adds a second trip to a repair shop.

There is one genuine exception, and we will state it plainly because pretending otherwise would be dishonest: if your handset is five or more years old, has a tired battery, and you plan to replace it inside a year, a good mid-tier aftermarket panel is a defensible choice.   1. Check True Tone. Go to Settings, Display and Brightness. If True Tone was there before the repair and has vanished, you have an unpaired or non-OEM panel.
  2. Run a white-field brightness test. Open a blank white note, set brightness to maximum, and take the phone outside. If it washes out completely in daylight, the peak brightness is well below original.
  3. Look for colour cast at the edges. On a white background, check whether the edges are noticeably warmer or greener than the centre. Uneven colour is a hallmark of lower-grade panels.
  4. Test touch in the corners. Open the notes app and draw slow continuous circles into all four corners. Skipping, breaks or dead patches indicate a lower sampling rate or a poorly seated digitizer flex.
